The first section of the Pennine Bridleway to open, in May 2002, was the Mary Towneley Loop, a 47 mile circuit through the south Pennines on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire, around Todmorden and Bacup. The late Mary Townley was a campaigner for the Bridleway. This was followed in May 2004 by the southern section of the route from Middleton Top in the Peak District to meet the Loop at Summit, northeast of Rochdale, giving a total trail length of /117 miles. The second section of the Pennine Bridleway is expected to be completed in 2007/8 and stretches all the way to Byrness, just south of the Scottish Borders. Access to the Bridleway can be obtained from Hartington, which is just 4 miles from our Dovedale cottage.
