Monsal Dale lies not far from the attractive village of Ashford in the Water. The head of the dale is entered via a steep stairway down to the viaduct of a disused railway, which forms the first part of the dale's footpath. The River Wye meanders along this dale, in one direction to join Millers Dale and in the opposite direction to join Deep Dale.
