Raven's Tor is the first startling feature of Dovedale as one enters the gorge from Milldale. It marks the gateway into the dale. The short walk from Milldale to Raven's Tor is superb, with its lush green swathes, grassy pastures grazed by cattle, and sun bathers basking amid the wildflowers on its gentle lower slopes.
The Nabs is a series of rocky crags on the ridge top of the Derbyshire side of Dovedale, bounded on one side by Nabs Dale, a dale that is densely packed with a thick covert of trees and vegetation. From their lofty heights one can look across to the idyllic village of Alstonefield, which houses our holiday cottage. Pickering Dale, a little further on, runs at an angle to Nabs Dale and eventually merges with it. A path from Nabs Dale leads to Hanson Grange and from thence to Moat Low Tumulus.
