The River Dove begins on Axe Edge, at the edge of the Pennines just outside of Buxton. The spring from which it begins is well marked. Its journey is begun steeply downhill, through farmland, and after only several hundred yards has developed into a small river. There are 3 distinct stages to the river. The first is where it passes through shale country, where the dominent landscape is that of rounded hills. At Hartington in begins to flow through limestone, characterised by steep cliffs, gorges and caves. This is the most attractive of its 3 stages. Finally, after Dovedale it begins to flow through sandstone country, slows down and meanders in the flatter countryside. It eventually merges with the River Trent at Newton Solney, near to Burton on Trent.
